Obstacles To Be Faced When Integrating ICT In P.E. Study Review
Hello readers, welcome back for another blog post!
As education and the methods in which the way we learn evolves and grows each and every day, I have always wondered what is the difference between a teacher who is willing to welcome in a change to their classroom and one that does not? What obstacles do teachers initially fear or face when attempting to take on new practices? As I myself think of taking on a change to the way I do things I always tend to think of the roadblocks ahead I will face. One change educators have been faced lately is the push to incorporate ICT into the system of education. Coming from a Physical education background, I know the challenges and resistance educators have had to welcome ICT into the gymnasium and implementing tech into lessons. So I searched to find some research about what obstacles PE educators perceive to face when looking to incorporate ICT into their gymnasium, and I found a study I would like to share with you.
Researchers from the University of Alcala, Spain's created a study to determine what are the main obstacles faced by PE teachers to integrated ICT in their classrooms? as well as determining if the teacher's age is an important factor that influences the obstacles to integrate ICT in PE classrooms?
This study was conducted in 2017 with 400 Senior years PE teachers participating from Madrid, Spain. Out of the 400 participates 254 were men (63.5%) and 146 were women (36.5%). Ages ranged between 20 and 50+ years old, with an average age of 44.1 years old for the participants. Each participant was interviewed face to face and asked questions from a standardized questionnaire created from a committee of 19 university professors holding Ph.D.'s related to ICT in PE. Each interview was carried out by the study's main researcher, who informed participants of the confidential nature of the interviews as well as anonymity being assured before any interview began. These interviews were carried out at each teacher's personal school, answering each question with a response 1-5 (Strongly disagree to Strongly agree) lasting roughly 20 minutes in length.
The final findings/conclusions to this study were very interesting as researchers were left with lots of detailed data to help them come to a conclusion. The study found that PE teachers perceive all obstacles over 27.2% in the Agree and Strongly Agree columns for Table 1 & Table 2 to be a perceived obstacle for integrating ICT in their classrooms.
The following obstacles were perceived to be an obstacle to implementing ICT for over half of the participants.
This study was very well done and brought great insight into the challenges of incorporating ICT into the PE setting. I would like to see a similar study done on a different subject area to compare results and see what differences there may be. Overall the greatest point that stands out to me is how (64.4%) of the participants viewed integrating ICT into the gymnasium would correlate to a loss in physical activity time. I think this derives directly from the unfamiliarity to ICT themselves and not having an understanding of what tech can do to be incorporated within their lessons. If in a greater context ICT was taught and utilized across all curriculum students would already be familiar with the use of different technologies thus eliminating the learning curve and wasted time for instruction increasing the time students have for the activity.
Thanks again for your time, I hope you were able to take something away from my reflection on this research study. If you have any questions, comments, or feedback, feel free to start the discussion in the comments.

Table 1 describes the obstacles related specifically to the teacher. |

Table 2 describes the obstacles related specifically to the students. |
The following obstacles were perceived to be an obstacle to implementing ICT for over half of the participants.
- Loss of physical activity time (64.4%)
- Lack of material and economic resources (63.2%)
- Investment in time and training (61.5%)
- Unsuitable use (54.9%)
- Lack of knowledge for integrating ICT (51.5%)
By age, these same obstacles were perceived but in a different order. Each age group, for the most part, had a different leading perceived obstacle to be the most challenging.
Age
20-29 - Unsuitable use (65%)
30-39 - Investment in time and training (66.1%) Loss of physical activity time (66.1%)
40-49 - Loss of physical activity time (65.3%)
50+ - Loss of physical activity time (64.4%)
