Tech Resource Review!
Welcome back readers,
Lets talk resources! All educators need them and all educators use them. Resources could be utilized from the school, home, community, online or a good old fashioned hard copy book. However in this blog post I'm going to focus on a quality online resource you can use within your classroom that can be found on YouTube called Above the Noise.
This You Tube channel I want to share is created for educational purposes to take current controversial or question provoking topics and display them in a simplistic student friendly method. Videos are hosted and commentated by host Myles Bess. Each video uses multiple different visual ques such as animations, photos and graphics. The target for Above The Noise in each of their videos is to simplify and give the facts of both sides of the story for what every topic each video is covering as news or other outlets can misinterpret information. This allows viewers (Students) to reflect and critically think on the topic to come to their own conclusion and form their own opinion of said topic.
This channel can be a great resource or tool for teachers to use in the classroom with their students. Creating a daily or even weekly routine with your class to watch and create lessons off of the selected video. An idea I thought of to incorporate these videos into the classroom would be for the class as a whole to watch a video, then however you want to do it either individual or group have students summarize, reflect, or defend a position on the video and journal their response. In a ELA class this is a great daily or weekly practice for students to practice free writing documenting their thoughts. This can also be done in any other subject to get students to critically think and provoke thought on whatever topic it may be as Above The Noise does a great job at creating videos to cover multiple subject areas.
Some of the great features to this resource, is the great organization of the videos making it easy for you to look through and find the right one for your subject area. The length of the videos are not to short and not to long making them a perfect length for depth in the content, you can also pause and discuss several times throughout with the given length. This channel also offers a website full of other resources and materials perfect to help you plan your lesson or collaborate with others on the same videos.
Some drawbacks of this resource is the fact the videos don't necessarily touch all subjects and eventually you can run out of new videos to share with the class. This isn't the end of the world but something to keep in mind. Also with the videos being created to be fun for the students and to the point you don't want to be relying on them to teach critical subject matter, as there are better more in depth videos to cover that. Lastly, as this resource is on the Internet you are dependent on having online access and need to rely on all the tech to work for the class to view. Again this isn't that big of a deal but something to keep in mind.
